Double click on your FM8 midi clip, look at your envelope box, and select modulation in the second dropdown menu and then you can draw in your automations.

If you map everything to the mod wheel in FM8, there is an automation envelope in Ableton to automate it. Native Instruments has made some game changing products, but interface design is not their strong suit IMO. FM8 is more powerful, but the GUI could really use a facelift.

In the mod tab, set your mod parameter to 100 in the matrix for each operator. The FM8 is one of the most powerful soft synths available and is widely championed for the quality of its sound, selection. Lets say you want to control the operators with the mod wheel instead of mapping each one through ableton. You can ghetto map it but it isnt exactly the same as the mod wheel.
